I have always admired dark humour. I also like humour that shocks, that provokes. Jokes can be very edgy and sometimes they may outrage good taste but I support the right of comedians to follow their instincts. And that’s why I fully support Andrew Lawrence who in the aftermath of the “Liverpool incident” posted the following;
It’s a JOKE! And yes, some people might take offence but then again the perpetually offended are always going to be with us. But, very quickly, Andrew found himself being cancelled.
The Hot Water Comedy Club issued this statement.
I thought that this was a very balanced response from a fellow comedian Simon Evans
Yes, it was a tasteless comment and it was in the heat of the moment. However many people thought it was funny, with almost 5m views. I enjoy Andrew’s work and I believe him to be the real deal so I leave you with this video which he also put out yesterday. Andrew gets it and that’s why corporate woke comedy are out to get him.
*** If you enjoy my work here, can I ask you to consider becoming a PAID subscriber, it’s only £5 a month, you can cancel if you don’t enjoy it but I know you will. I want to thank the kind people who already do this, without your help this becomes impossible. Thank you in anticipation of your support***
It was just a joke, and at no time was the community of Liverpool or the people caught up in the incident were the target, the joke was as self deprecating. Cancellation is a rabid response to a bit a dark humour that we all need to deal with the harsh realities of life from time to time.
Time to boycott those “comedy” clubs. Let’s face it the shows are not likely to be funny anyway.
