I remember going to see Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in concert in Reading in the late 1980’s. They were funny women and I enjoyed their performance. Dawn French went on to star in the hugely popular comedy series The Vicar of Dibley which ran on the BBC from 1994 to 2000.
It was a feel good kind of series and the character was well suited to French and set in the fictional Oxfordshire village of Dibley, which is assigned a female vicar following the 1993 changes in the Church of England that permitted the ordination of women. (Big mistake btw) French plays the lead role of vicar Geraldine Granger.
She never quite repeated those dizzying levels of fame but her career has kept going and she has never been that far from the spotlight.
She has also shown political activism.
Last June she promoted a tactical voting campaign against the Conservative Party encouraging followers to use the hashtag #TacticalVote to oppose the Tories. She is also part of the Open Borders crowd, and she has expressed support for “refugees”, notably through wearing “No Borders” jewelry. How quaint.
But last week, she made a major misstep when she posted this short video on her X account.
To many people, it seemed that she was taking a very pro Palestinian position and making fun of Israelis who had suffered at the hands of Hamas. It all went wrong and within a day she had deleted it and pushed out the following apology.
Note the Rainbow flag, the Ukraine flag and the Palestinian flag in her bio.
It absolutely reeks of PR damage control. If she REALLY cares for the people “on both sides”, I can’t see an Israeli flag in that bio, can you? She was caught out and we all saw it.
The wonderful spot on parody video gets French right. Listen to it - especially the pay off line. That’s the truth.
In 2022, Dawn French toured the UK with a show titled Dawn French is a Huge Twat. That turned out to be quite accurate.

Intel Lady is very good. I don't know if she has a writer behind her, but her ability to combine satirical scripts with quality impersonation is a rare find. The first time I saw her was in a stand-up show where she had Angela Rayner completely nailed (and not in the sense Rayner seems to imagine Tory politicians wish to nail her).
I know this is rather tangential to your main point but if I start writing anything about French (or her equally arrogant, entitled and hypocritical husband) I may risk a visit from plod ...
That parody was SPOT ON! 🤣😂
