The things that they say to get into position!
The UK's choice for the next ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson, has described his previous criticism of Donald Trump as "ill-judged and wrong".
Oh really?
Speaking in an interview with US broadcaster Fox News, he said the new US president had won "fresh respect" from him, adding he was "quite confident" Trump would approve of his appointment.
“Quite confident” - my my! His Lordship doth protest too much!
As part of the process Lord Mandelson's credentials have to be presented to Trump, which the president is reportedly expected to agree to. In previous years, Lord Mandelson has described Trump as "reckless" and "a bully". In an interview with an Italian journalist in 2019, he described Trump as "reckless and a danger to the world". This followed a 2018 interview with the Evening Standard where he described Trump as "a bully".
And now Mandelson grovels to try and get his appointment approved by President Trump. He eats his own words.
I suspect he will be approved but that Trump is playing a game with Starmer and Mandelson. It seems to me that the UK regime is being softened up by Trump into thinking Trump 2.0 is more mellow and friendly towards hard core Socialist regimes. When the moment comes, Trump will strike.
Just consider the Chagos Islands deal that Starmer was trying to push through as one of his ‘achievements”
Foreign Secretary David Lammy was directly challenged by his new American counterpart over Labour's attempt to surrender the Chagos Islands, it has emerged.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is understood to have pressed Lammy on whether the agreement will undermine US security interests given the strategic American base on one of the islands.
I feel bad for Rubio having to even talk to low IQ Lammy. But there can be little doubt that Trump will not let this deal go through. So Starmer is an irrelevance to some degree as will Mandelson too. If he thinks he can slime his way into Trump regime good books, I think he is in for a BIG surprise. Trump 2.0 is tougher, more focused and more powerful than ever and Mandelson can say his mea culpas for all he wants but Trump will decide.
You’ve just got to laugh, haven’t you! It could have been worse, like Diane Abbott or Steptoe Corbyn . Mandy will be insufferable now. It will go to his head and he’ll give the Americans headaches!
Grovel or not, I hope he is rejected. His Chinese links cannot be ignored.
