Looks like not only will the NHS prioritise treating migrants but it also wants to now primarily recruit them! Is this sensible?
In a quite remarkable report, I read that the government is freezing university funding for medical courses, including nursing, effectively capping the number of training places available for British nurses. Couple this with a parallel substantial cut in apprenticeship funding, you can then see how it will exacerbate NHS staffing shortage, forcing it to rely EVEN more heavily on overseas recruitment to fill critical roles. Maybe that is the aim?
As of September 2023, approximately 30% of NHS nurses and health visitors in England are non-UK nationals, equating to about 100,776 out of 335,763 full-time equivalent nurses. This figure has risen from 19.7% in September 2020 and is the highest since data collection began in 2009. This new decision will have the direct consequence of driving that % EVEN higher.
