I am wondering what has brought about such a change in human behaviour? Maybe because we are so plugged into the Internet that we are totally bombarded with stuff and people get more worked up over issues because they can literally spend their whole time immersed in them.
I do find the depth of anger in the West over the Gaza/Palestinian issue absurd (for example, why not the same anger over Russian ballistic missiles killing Ukrainian civilians in their apartment blocks?). I can understand Palestinians commenting on it, and other Arabs, but for the Western liberals to actually join the marches dressed up in keffiyah and chanting "Death to Israel" it seems that they simply want to indulge in group think. Or perhaps think they are protesting against the Establishment like the hippies in the 60s.
Agreed, and I don’t see this changing anytime soon. The Gaza situation will be with us for at least a decade (as estimated by the most recent projections about disarmament, debris recovery and BILLIONS in reconstruction.) What will be very interesting will be the memory of the typical sympathizers. Will they remain entrenched in the issue or will they drift away as the next Social contagion catches their eyes?
At a Festival I attended a couple of years' ago, there was 1 band which started ranting about 'Palestine'. The next act countered this, which was a relief; I admired him for standing up to it. There was nothing like this last year, and I'm hoping for no politics, when I go again in a few weeks' time. I'm always very wary because the music industry is so captured. We're all oldies in the main, though, so no Gen Z histrionics.
Yes, a friend of mine who lives in New York is a huge music fan and extremely knowledgeable. He regularly sends me posts of musicians who have succumbed to the woke mind virus and we both have a good chuckle - oldies like Moby who probably the Gen Z'ers have never heard of and so are hoping to grab some attention. The music industry seems to be becoming as woke as the acting one. I still think what happened to Laurence Fox was disgusting - destroying a very talented actor's career. Same goes for Graham Linehan. And now they a going for John Cleese. I admire Boy George for stiffing the finger at them. These leftards are like vampires baying for blood.
While Ed Sheeran isn’t the first Artist to be first beloved and then scorned for an aversion to political rhetoric…he may be one of the last to fall so precipitously. The Music industry has firmly fallen captive of radical identity politics. It is captive OF the practice. Moving forward, there will be swarms of audiences whose FIRST concern is where YOU fall on THEIR political spectrum and whether or not that perception meets with THEIR social expectations. Just imagine an entire Industry beholden to this phenomenon…where every Artist is REQUIRED to pass a litmus test in order to avoid protests and disruptions at a concert…where small groups can AND WILL ruin entire events. Every major Artist undoubtedly has a cadre of Media handlers who present them with a “Social Briefing” that outlines exactly what is acceptable speech… and acceptable thought! It is unfathomable that a future Artist can reach fame and notoriety based solely upon their musical abilities.
I suppose the Democrats started this curious assault on our intelligence, when they paid actors such as Robert de Niro vast ‘electioneering’ sums, to perform outside N.Y. lawcourts
But talentless morons like Bobby Vylan and indeed Macklemore, are gleefully antisemitic for free
Loved the article and like you, I hanker back to simpler, safer times
Could not agree more. We are immersed in lunacy.
