Why is there so much crime in the UK? Who is committing custodial crimes? Well, those are two questions you will not hear being asked by the “experts” following the claims by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmoud that the UK Prison space may yet run out.
The justice secretary has said even under the government's plans to open 14,000 more prison places, they could still run out of space over the next few years. Shabana Mahmood told the BBC that "building alone is not enough" to deal with the critical lack of space in UK jails. The government is publishing its 10-year strategy to deal with overcrowding in prisons - including more details of how it will create 14,000 more places in England and Wales by 2031. It comes after prisons were just 100 spaces away from reaching full capacity over the summer. The government released thousands of inmates early in order to free up space - with more than 1,700 let out in England and Wales in September, and then another 1,200 in October.
OK, let’s go with the official narrative for a moment. In essence the Government is going to struggle to provide as many prison spaces as are needed to cope with the vast numbers of people being sent to prison. Why are so many people likely to end up in prison, and what crimes do they commit to warrant such a sentence?
A little analysis of the prison population is quite revealing;
The largest number of prisoners received a custodial sentence for theft offences – more than 25,000 individuals and 29% of prisoners. This high number is a result of the very high number of convictions for theft offences (more than 89,000), rather than harsh sentencing for these offences.
70% of custodial sentences are imposed on those with at least seven previous convictions or cautions, and 50% are imposed on those with at least 15 previous convictions or cautions.
So in essence a huge chunk of the prison population is made up of people who frequently get convicted, released and then get caught repeating the same crime. That tells me that the current Prison regime is not deterring those who commit crime on a regular basis.
But who are they, precisely?
As you can see, the White demographic makes up the majority of prisoners BUT is disproportionately smaller than its share of the total population. The Black demographic however is 3x higher than the total population. So we have a problem in our Black community, but this is rarely addressed.
There is another dimension to this we shouldn’t ignore;
Muslims make up a disproportionately large bloc of inmates. Check out the numbers above.
So from the data, we see that the UK Black population and the UK Muslim population are massively overrepresented in our prisons. Perhaps the Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmoud could address this? Or might she be too busy sending patriots to prison for posting spicy memes, or persecuting Tommy Robinson?
I don’t normally agree with the left but when they say Prison doesn’t work, they have a point. However the solution has to be to make it MUCH more severe and to be a place that you NEVER EVER want to end up in.
About 20 years ago I visited a young man in prison in the South East of England. I would estimate that about 80% of the inmates in the room were of colour! I’m sure things will not have improved in that respect.
