Your analysis is spot on. Some who had worked with Johnson over the years warned about his lazy self-indulgence and empty self-promotion but, although consistent with my recollections of him from Balliol, I tended to dismiss the warnings because they mainly came from his natural political enemies - Remainers, etc.

But it may not have been simple selfishness and pusillanimity on Johnson's part. I am increasingly of the view that no individual is allowed to attain high office unless the system has adequate leverage (kompromat, etc.) to control them. That is mainly why the system turned on Trump - he already had too much wealth to be susceptible to bribery and there were not enough skeletons in his closet.

OMG, the Conservative party are totally deluded! "He could be a weapon against them in places like the Red Wall" - no, he couldn't! They are not going to be fooled again. Absolute cheese for brains, out of touch retards.
