And at the same time as that terrible mass murder in County Armagh, US citizens were filling the collection boxes for the IRA in the pubs and clubs of Boston. I saw it with my own eyes.
I’m from Birmingham where the cowards from the IRA murdered people in the pub bombings. The Brummies fought back and the Irish community, even the innocent ones, were nowhere to be seen for a while. Our shop steward was Irish and ashamed to come to work. It took the cowardly IRA thirty years to bomb Birmingham again.
Today the police would be on the internet and arresting anyone who complained about the bombings.
I remember this really well. Even though I grew up in London, we always felt these moment in Ireland like they were our own. I experienced an IRA bomb that went off under a bridge in North London (staples corner) in 1992. We were living 2 miles away and the block of flats we lived in shook like there was an earthquake, and lead window frames rattled like they were about to fall out. My mother was absolutely terrified. Born in 1942 I think it took her back almost that far.
So sorry about this terrible memory for you, David. Personally, I cannot forgive the IRA for all their evil and cruelty. Never will. What did it achieve? Barstools. All of them!
