Hi David, yes a sad story. Some species pair up for life and if one of them dies the other remains single from then on. Others pair up more temporarily or permissively. Not sure where Thrushes are on the spectrum, it tends to be larger birds in the first group. J
It's called anthropomorphism. (Ooh hark at me) My husband's just seen a dead squirrel whilst out walking. He went to move it away and its little paw moved. It wasn't quite dead. What to do? He couldn't bring himself to kill it. A cat or fox will get to it, hopefully. So sad.
Things like this really get to me too. Nature and life can be so cruel sometimes.

I think we find our humanity in how we respond to what happens to little animals, a thrush, a squirrel, it all matters.
